18th Birthday - Things I've Learnt

As you may or may not know, on Wednesday I turned 18 (woohoo!). Being a tad bit hungover, I have decided to share with you 18 things that I have learnt from my 18 years in the world so far. Enjoy!

1. Life goes on. As cliche as it sounds, its one of the most valuable life lessons I've learnt.

2. You can look back on situations that were once horrible, embarrassing or scary and laugh.

3. Heartbreak is one of the worst pains a human can experience. I'm not particularly talking about myself, but my 18 years of time have taught me that heartbreak is a bitch.

4. Books are the greatest form of escapism.

5. Time really is a healer. Once again a slightly cliche one, but I've learnt that time heals people and situations. If you're going through a bad time, think of yourself in a years time and whether you'll still be sat thinking about it. Chances are, you won't. Things die down over time and everything feels better a few months on.

6. People don't always say the things you want them to say or do the things you want them to do, and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it.

7. Every moment that you spend upset, angry or annoyed is a moment of happiness wasted. I'm trying to work hard on this one, and trying to embrace every moment of my life.

8. Every single person gets the same 24 hours in their day. You can spend yours lying on the sofa, or you can get up and chase your dreams.

9. People don't always agree with you, and that's ok. How boring would it be if we all had exactly the same thoughts? I've learnt that other people may have different opinions to you, and it's actually a good thing.

10. It is possible to be in love in your teens.

11. Time doesn't slow down. Life has this really annoying habit of whizzing by, and it doesn't stop. Things happen, places change, people move on - the world is alive and it won't slow down for you.

12. A hug from your mum can instantly make you feel a million times better.

13. You are responsible for your own actions and words, and only you.

14. I've learnt that everyone is fighting some sort of battle, no matter how big or small. You are not the only one going through things - sometimes you may feel the saddest person in the world, but someone is always going through worse.

15. Children grow up really fast. It only feels like yesterday that my little brother was born; he's now running around and screeching 'love you!'

16. Everything is temperamental. The world is constantly advancing and moving on, and there will always be a 'new' version of what you have.

17. Yankee Candles are the best-smelling things to ever grace the planet.

18. I'm actually very lucky to be alive - right here, right now.

What have you learnt over time?
