Top 10 Funniest Welsh Words

We're not just famous for our beautiful green hills, billions of sheep, leek-munching and glorious daffodils! Us Welsh also have our very own language, and here are my top 10 funniest words and phrases within it.

1. Popty Ping
My favourite word in the whole welsh language. 'Popty ping' means microwave... and you can't get much better than that.

2. Moron
Moron means carrots in welsh, so if you hear someone say they're going to pick up some morons, or are eating some morons, don't panic. They're carrots.

3. Buwch Goch Gota ('Little Red Cow')
In the welsh language, ladybirds are known as buwch goch gotas, which literally translates to 'little red cows'. I suppose they have they do have black spots, but that's the only similarities between ladybirds and cows, right?

4. Nwdls
....Meaning noodles. And not just your regular noodles either, these are proper good welsh 'nwdls' (fun to say with your thickest welsh accent!)

5. Sboncen
The welsh word for the sport squash. Let's go and have a good old game of sboncen.

6. Bwci-bo
Bwci-bo (pronounced booky-bo) means ghosts in welsh. How can you be scared of them when they're called bwci-bos?!

7. Smwddio (pronounced Smoothio)
...Meaning ironing. Us Welsh are clever because half the time the word for what we are doing is very literal. Smwddio, for example, is exactly what we are doing when ironing - just smoothing out the clothes.

8. Igam-ogam
A line or path that is not straight. "Oooh, last night I was so drunk I couldn't walk - very igam-ogam."

9. Wilber
Meaning wheelbarrow. So much quicker and easier to say. Us welsh love taking shortcuts in our language.

10. Pysgod Wibli Wobli
Another personal favourite. Psygod wibli wobli (meaning jellyfish) is more slang than an official term, but it literally means wibbly wobbly fish!

  5. I used to work as a sales assistant and would love it whenever a Welsh person would call up. I couldn't spell their addresses to save myself but the accent is amazing. Popty Ping is definitely my favourite word, I might throw it into my vocabulary just because it's so brilliant.
