Escape Reality In Cardiff

If you're looking for something fun or slightly unusual to do with friends or family, I have the perfect suggestion. Last month I was invited to try out and review Escape Reality in Cardiff with five friends. As I live in Bristol and Cardiff is only an hour bus journey away, I jumped at the chance. Not only was this something I'd never heard of or come across before, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to get some friends together for some fun.

The main idea behind Escape Reality is that you are locked in a room and must solve a series of puzzles and tasks to escape the room in under 60 minutes. If you escape within this timeframe, you win. If not, you lose. There are several different games to choose from, with each room being based on and decorated around a different theme. One option, for example, was the Enigma game which was based on the gory Saw films. People who opt to play this game are chained to the wall when they enter, and then must undergo a set of tasks in order to escape the room in the time limit. My friends and I decided to go for a game that was a little more light-hearted (I'm not sure how well my anxiety would deal with a Saw-themed game!), and settled on Jungala, which had a difficulty rating of 3.

Here is the summary: "You have discovered an old board game in your attic and once opened you are engulfed by a vortex and transported into an alternative realm. After only seeing a glimpse of the terrible world inside you are thrown back into reality. Vowing never to approach the game again you attempt to leave but the door has been locked trapping you in. Glancing over to the game you see the words “The dice have been rolled.” You have no choice but to complete the game or be trapped inside the other realm for eternity. You only have sixty minutes to complete the game!"

On arrival we put all of our belongings into lockers and were then taken to our escape room. Before entering, we were told the rules: solve the tasks in 60 minutes and we escape, fail to do this and we stay forever (...just kidding). We were given a little electronic tablet to take in with us which we could use if we were really struggling with a task. Using the tablet for hints and clues, however, meant that we would be wasting valuable time while waiting for someone to come and help us - so we wanted to avoid that option as much as possible. The tablet also had a timer on it that let us know exactly how much time we had left.

We were ushered into our room, the door was locked behind us and our timer swiftly started. I don't want to give too much away in case any of you choose to try it out for yourself, but let's just stay be prepared to start solving tasks as soon as you enter! Each puzzle or task that is solved leads on to another one, which will eventually lead to your final escape. Expect a few little surprises along the way, too.

So, did we manage to escape in time? No. The tasks vary in levels of difficulty, and a few of them left us pretty stumped which took up lots of our time. I'll admit, we did have to ask for help quite often. I think maybe the tasks could have been a little bit simple, as we would not have been able to complete some of them without assistance. Overall I thought that Escape Reality was a lot of fun, and a great activity to do with my friends who all enjoyed it too. It definitely beats just meeting up for a drink with your friends, and is an unusual but exciting way to get people together. I also think that Escape Reality would be the perfect thing to d with your family - I'm desperate to get my brother and sister in there to see how they do! For 6 people to play, Escape Reality is £15 each - and for 20% off, enter the code IAMCARDIFF20 at the checkout.

Have you ever visited Escape Reality?
