The Cuban, Bristol

If you want a little (or a big) taste of Cuba, The Cuban in Bristol is the place to go for the ultimate Cuban experience. The restaurant, inspired by the beautiful city of Havana, aims to celebrate the true spirit of Cuba and all things Cuban. With over 150 different rums stocked, live music scheduled every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, an exciting cocktail menu and foods cooked using the freshest ingredients, The Cuban is the perfect setting for a truly wonderful Cuban experience.
Last Friday Lewis and I were invited down to have a Cuban experience all of our own - and it did not disappoint. The Cuban is nestled just off Bristol's harbourside, next to Millenium Square - super central and super easy to find. Upon arrival we were guided to a booth by a friendly waiter and handed some menus.

To start we ordered some cocktails. I ordered a Pornstar Martini (because who doesn't love a Pornstar Martini?!) and Lewis opted for a Last Day in Cuba - their very own signature cocktail. Both were delicious, although Lewis's cocktail glass was coated in an icing sugar/sherbet which did go over his dark shirt and trousers. Top tip - if you order a Last Day in Cuba cocktail, prepare to get messy! That said, it still tasted delicious.

Our cocktails were brought to us by a friendly waitress called Laryssa who was our waitress for the night. She was smiley, bubbly and made us feel right at home. She also gave us quick service and always checked on us to make sure that we had everything that we needed. For our starters, we ordered deep fried calamari, beef quesadillas and croquetas de puchero. The calamari was delicious - light and crispy yet not too rubbery. The other two dishes were also lovely, although the quesadillas were a little bit bland. But apart from that, it was a lovely selection of tapas starters.

As we visited on a Friday there was live music and entertainment which really added to the experience. The Cuban's local Spanish band, "Noche and Cubanna", started at 8pm - just two people and a guitar. The woman's voice was absolutely beautiful and it was lovely to sit and enjoy some delicious food whilst listening to good quality live music. It, again, added even more to the Cuban experience. The only extra thing I needed was a cigar!

Next, it was time to order our mains. To be quite honest everything on the menu looked incredible (I was so tempted to opt for the seafood paella) but in the end my love for steak won and a sirloin with peppercorn sauce was ordered. Lewis ordered the Trio of Pork which included three separate cuts: pork belly (slow cooked for 36 hours), 9-hour-braised pig cheeks and a pork fillet medallion, all served with sage mash, caramelised onions and garlic. The pork was supposed to be accompanied by a cider sauce but Lewis isn't the biggest fan of cider so he asked our waitress if she had any recommendations for alternative sauces. She kindly went and asked the chefs for their advice and in the end he settled for a porcini mushroom sauce - which turned out to be delicious! Both meals were cooked very well. The pork was tender and melted in your mouth and actually went perfectly with the mushroom sauce. Although the picture does make it look a little on the small side, it was more filling than it looked! My steak was lovely and cooked perfectly too - the perfect amount of pink.

To finish our lovely evening we ordered some more cocktails. I stuck with the Pornstar Martini and Lewis opted for a Pina Colada which was lovely. They certainly know how to make good cocktails here! We also ordered a little dessert to share (which was just plain greedy to be honest as we were both super full up) which was delicious. As our final cocktails and dessert was served, the evening entertainment started picking up. The lights dimmed down and a fabulous Spanish dancer in the traditional costume came out and danced her way around the tables as people drank and danced. It was so much fun and created an amazing atmosphere! This was followed by a DJ (DJ Pilo) who played some funky Reggaeton tunes. Just as we were ready to leave the dance floor was beginning to fill and there were so many happy faces. Definitely the Cuban experience I will not forget!

Overall I would highly recommend visiting The Cuban for a truly wonderful Cuban dining experience. The staff were all friendly and helpful, the food was delicious, the cocktails were lovely and the entertainment was fabulous. I'd go as far as saying that this was one of our best Bristol experiences yet.

Have you visited The Cuban?

  12. love when there is live music, although I always worry it will be too loud (I struggle to hear/concentrate in restaurants as it is!) - sounds like a great time though
