Meditation is something that I've been embracing for a while now, and the benefits from practicing it are endless. Regular meditation can help with anxiety and depression, as well as easing the stress of everyday life. Clearing your mind through mindfulness meditation also leads to improved concentration, a deeper understanding of ourselves and more restful sleeps. So, why wouldn't you? Here are 5 steps to help you get started.
1. Find Your Perfect Space
One of the most important aspects of meditation is making sure you are in the right place - somewhere that you feel comfortable and relaxed. Choose somewhere that is quiet and peaceful, and where it likely that you won't be disturbed. It's also important to think about the different things you will see and feel while in this space. Temperature and lighting, for example, could make a big difference.
2. Make Comfortableness a Priority
If you're not comfortable, your mind will not be totally focused and calm. Start off with ensuring that you're in comfortable clothes that are not too tight or restricting. I like to meditate in loose t-shirts and harem pants as they allow for stretching and are super comfy and light! Make sure that wherever you choose to sit or lie in is completely comfortable - sitting on a hard cold floor will make it harder to focus.
3. Don't Get Frustrated
When meditating for the first time, your thoughts can be a huge distraction. It is important to accept that completely clearing your mind and thoughts is a long, gradual process, and it is important to not feel frustrated when thoughts cloud your mind when meditating. Acknowledge your thoughts, and let them go again. Trying too hard to keep them out of your mind can ruin the overall effect of meditating.
4. Take Small Steps
Meditation may seem simple, but it in fact requires dedication and skill - something that is built up over time. 5 minute meditation sessions are perfect for beginners, as it just enough time to benefit from the effects but will also ease you into the meditation process nicely. From there, work your way up to longer time periods. Allowing yourself time to grow, and finding what works best for you, is all part of the process.
5. Consistency Is Key
Meditation is something that works best when practiced regularly. Try to make meditation a routine and habit in your life by setting aside a bit of time each day to practice it. Practicing meditation regularly not only improves the benefits, it also opens the door to more advanced levels and techniques of meditation - always something to work towards.
Great post Amy. I've heard that meditation is good for anxiety and low mood. I've recently started to try some. I'm not very good at relaxing or concentrating on it. But I'm not giving up on it yet.
ReplyDeleteGreat post.

I was thinking of doing meditations, since I have anxiety. This post definetly inspired me to do it. Is it okay if you are listening to some music while meditating?

ReplyDeleteBy meditating, we´re learning to disengage ourselves from habitual clinging and disperse the defilements and obscurations that hinder our capacity to serve others, such as illusory feelings of scarcity and fears of deprivation. We gradually learn to be more conscious and make better choices. We develop simplicity instead of comlexity, open-mindedness instead of narrow-mindedness, flexibility rather than rigidity. We feel ourselves to be more available to others and to give more generously of ourselves.
