Affected By Flight Cancellations?

Unless you've had your head buried underneath a rock (or don't own a TV or go on Twitter...) you may have noticed that RyanAir have been causing quite the stir. Just last week RyanAir released their second 'batch' of flight cancellations which are set to affect more than 400,000 people. In total, 18,000 flights have been cancelled on 32 different routes between November and March. Crazy. The reason for the many flight cancellations is that RyanAir have been suffering from a staff shortage. To put it bluntly, RyanAir themselves wrote on Facebook: "We have messed up in the planning of pilot holidays and we're working hard to fix that". Right. The whole fiasco has been dubbed 'Europe's worst-ever case of staff shortage'.

If you are set to be affected by the flight cancellations, here are a few handy tips to get familiar with. RyanAir have published a full list of cancellations should you need to check flights.

  • "You have the right to be rerouted to your final destination shown on your ticket at the earliest opportunity under comparable transport conditions or rebooking at a later date if that is more convenient for you" (stated by EU Rules) - basically, it is up to RyanAir to to reroute you as early as possible. 
  • If you are not offered an alternative route (which is breaching the EU Rules), you are entitled to be reimbursed for purchasing a new flight ticket
  • If your accommodation at your destination is non-cancellable, RyanAir are not entitled to pay for this - you have to go via travel insurance. 
  • Regarding compensation, an airline must refund the price of the ticket plus compensation depending on the distance of your flight. If you are given over two weeks notice, the airline must refund the ticket, however they are not obliged to compensate.

  3. And the most important part is once this over with,never use RyanAir ever again. If the pilots are this poorly staffed....imagine how bad the plane maintenance must be.

  4. I think it would be awful to fork out so much money for a trip only to have the airline cancel the flight. We flew Ryan Air in the summer; never again!

  8. I think it must be hard for anyone affected by a flight cancellation. It's awful for anyone but especially for people who work so hard and have plans. :(

  12. One key piece of additional advice is to book with a credit card whenever possible to give yourself that extra piece of cover, such as the recent situation for flight only customers of Monarch. At the same time, despite all the terrible news this type of thing really is very rare.
