Recently Lewis and I moved into a new place. As we were both moving from home, we have pretty much started from scratch - and we were both shocked at just how much essential stuff you need. I've decided to compile together a big list of things you need when moving into somewhere new for the first time. Although a lot of it is pretty basic and obvious, you will be surprised how much can go forgotten - and there's nothing worse than waking up in the morning with no mugs to have a cup of tea with on your first morning in a new place...
Kitchen
1. Kitchen roll
2. Washing up liquid
3. Washing up brushes/sponges
4. Tea towels
5. A mop, sweeping brush and dustpan and brush
6. 2 mugs, 2 plates, cutlery, 2 bowls (make sure you have these just as basic essentials when you move in for your first breakfast and dinners - and then you can shop around and expand!)
7. Wooden spoon, spatula
8. Frying pan, casserole dish, oven tray, saucepan
9. An oven mitt
10. Toaster
11. Kettle
12. Scissors
13. Cheese grater
14. Sharp knife set and chopping boards
15. Salt, pepper and other seasonings
16. Tinfoil and clingfilm
17. Can opener
18. Microwave
Bathroom
1. Toilet roll (you'd be surprised - make sure you stock up on toilet roll before moving into somewhere new)
2. A bin
3. A mirror
4. Towels
5. Bath mat
6. Toilet cleaner and toilet brush
7. Shampoo/conditioner/bodywash
8. Shower curtain
Bedroom
1. Laundry basket (and washing tablets)
2. A drying rack for wet clothes
3. A bin
4. Sheet, duvet cover, pillow cases
5. Hangers
6. A mirror
7. Lamp
Other
1. Light bulbs
2. Hoover

IKEA is a great place to go to get most (if not all) of these things.

I so could have done a list like this 9 years ago when I moved out from my parents place. This will definitely be helpful to others. Ikea is definitely a great place to get all these bits
ReplyDeleteSO handy for those moving out! I hope you are both very happy in your new place! xx

Great list to pass on to those also setting up home.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great list, it can be really daunting moving into somewhere and trying to make sure you have everything.
ReplyDeleteThis is great, especially for people who have never moved anywhere before
ReplyDeleteThis is a really useful list - I remember moving into our first place and having nothing!
ReplyDeleteI was just going to suggest going to IKEA for many of those items. You can expand your dishes by going to a thrift shop as well.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more on your list. I remember missing out some of this during the time I move out and move in to a new house. Before I am not yet familiar with IKEA but since I learned about it. IKEA is indeed the place to go to whenever home things is the topic.
ReplyDeleteGreat list! Ikea is definitely a great place to shop for most of these things! :) Congrats on moving into your new home! <3 xx
ReplyDeleteIt is scary how much stuff you need when startingf rom scratch. Good luck in your new home
ReplyDeleteGreat lists, I think a lot of people forget about the essentials like toilet and kitchen roll which you can not live without x
ReplyDeleteHow do people manage moving house without an Ikea being local? This is a great list for anyone who is imminently moving.
ReplyDeleteCheck list from heaven - great idea! It is funny, as my friend goes through more tea towels than anyone I know lol :) x
ReplyDeleteI love Ikea I'm such a fan of flat pack furniture. I think you've literally covered everything in you list!
ReplyDeleteIt really is crazy how many things you need to move in! Oh and congrats on the move, how does it feel? x
ReplyDeleteA really helpful list! We were so disorganised when we moved!
ReplyDeletegreat list its crazy how much you forget, we didnt have a masher for weeks haha
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your move lovely, I hope you're settling in well. I am forever buying new things for my house and I moved in over a year ago. I wish I had a list like this when I moved :)
ReplyDeleteWe weren't very organised with this move and spent the first week looking through boxes to find everything.
ReplyDeleteAh good luck in your new place, I love moving house and love IKEA for picking up all the essentials.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips and I must agree that you'll get most of these in IKEA if not maybe in Walmart. Most of them are really essential and a must to have though I would get the most important ones first if you can't cover all of it.
ReplyDeleteI think you have covered all the basic there. This is perfect to help anyone moving into their first home. Congratulations on the move.
ReplyDeletewell done on the move! A helpful list there x
ReplyDeleteI have moved to Italy for a month and I am as shocked as you at how many essential items I need, starting from the toilet paper all the way to washing powder and olive oil!
ReplyDeleteThis is a perfect list. I think for someone just moving to Uni it would be a really great basis for a starter kit for a first year student x
ReplyDeleteGreat list and I think you have everything covered. You are very organised! This would be great for students too!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant list. Even though we try to be minimal the amount of essentials can be baffling at times!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great list for those moving out and into their own place for the first time!
ReplyDeleteSadly, I haven't moved out yet but these are some fantastic tips and check lists!
ReplyDeleteGreat lists and I could def have done with this a few months ago!!
